Men’s kumite 86 kgYildiz Akdogan is a very special person. A native of Kayseri, Turkey, and The University of Melbourne student, she is training with the acclaimed martial art, Taekwondo, at Dong Bang Kuk. It is a discipline which she has learned since childhood, from her mother. Growing up in a village in Central Anatolia, Taekwondo was her only connection with the “art of combat”, and the one she prays will define her future.

Yildiz was a keen player of boxing, kickboxing, and soccer growing up, and the encouragement from her mother to take up Taekwondo inspired Yildiz to go beyond the strict limitations of Turkish games. It was in 1998, when she came to the University in Australia, that she began to train in the sport.

She followed the technique and style of the Taekwondo practiced in Australia, known as the Hapkido Style, under the renowned Tony Davis, and he quickly became an important mentor and friend. In 2003, Yildiz was finally able to do her first black belt examination, and became a Master in August 2005.

She has since graduated with a Bachelor of Community Health from Monash University and hopes to become a Doctor in the near future. Her determination to become a better person has seen her reach levels of competitive greatness, and she has the skills and confidence to thrive at the highest level.
