The e-way bill will enable authorities to track the movement of goods across the country and prevent smuggling and sale of contraband and counterfeit products. According to the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, the e-way bill system will be introduced on Jan. 1, 2018.

The erstwhile transport ministry had indicated that the passage of an e-way bill is a feature of the Information Technology Act 2000 which mandates that the information in regards to the goods transport should be available to any authority through an electronic medium.

The e-way bill system is designed to assist both the consumer and the government in making the country’s roads safer.

The Minister also added that the printing of e-way bills and signature of the controller of the terminal and shipment, along with the physical receipts of the goods movement, will add to the convenience and the efficiency of the e-way bill process.

Transport officers at the nation’s major export hubs such as Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai expressed satisfaction about the new system and stated that the proposed system will help them in more efficiently performing their duties, thus making the system more effective in a shorter span of time.

The e-way bill system will act as a deterrent to the use of fake receipts. It will also help track the movement of goods from the source to its destination country.

The move was welcomed by organizations such as the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) and the Association of Road Transport Mechanisation, C-O-I which stated that the government should introduce an e-way bill for logistics services.
