The post-depositional tectonic deformation of the easternmost Bavarian volcanics of the Austrian Alps was studied by means of magmatic geochemistry. Owing to the thickness of the oldest crystalline basement of the Alps (dolomites, gneisses) and the high degree of volcanic deformation of the upper Archaean crystalline gneiss in these mountains, the magmatic signature of any tectonic deformation in the lower crust and the Tertiary magmatic rocks is readily discernible. The results showed that the easternmost Bavarian volcanics were composed of recycled material emplaced after the closure of the Grenzkammer of the pre-Alpine Graben. This information confirms the existence of a zone of highly deformed, cratolithic basement rock in the eastern Alps and suggests that uplift of the Alps took place from the north. The east-northwest-trending fold axes, which are characteristic of the eastern Alps, must be related to these events, which would further indicate a relatively late continental collision
